High, confiscatory
property taxes are taxing not only elderly people and those on fixed
incomes out of their homes but also driving out working people. The root
of the problem is our runaway property valuation law revised in 1995 by
then-Gov. Ben Nelson and the Legislature. We must change this law!

Taxpayer Group Monitors and Rates Voting in Unicameral
As we believe that Nebraskans have a right to know how their elected
officials vote, NEBRASKA
TAXPAYERS FOR FREEDOM annually monitors the voting records of state
legislators in the Nebraska
Unicameral. NTF rates senators in the following categories:
1) fiscal responsibility
2) government intervention in private life
3) law and order
We rate state senators from the most conservative to
the least conservative. This year, NTF
tracked 85 bills. Starting at a base of zero, senators received 1.18%
credit for each good vote.
.
Placing first was State Senator Phil Erdman (District 47), with a 74.3 %
voting score. Rating lowest
on the scale was State Sen. Don Pederson (District 42), with a 30.7 %
score.
Said NTF chairman Doug Kagan, "The executive
committee of the Legislature refuses to
place the complete voting records of state senators on the official
Unicameral Internet web site, a site paid for
by taxpayer money. Because legislators apparently do not want overtaxed
and over-regulated Nebraskans to
see state senator voting records, NTF will place its complete
2006 voting record on its web site:
http://www.netaxpayers.org."

TAXPAYER GROUP OPPOSES LEGISLATIVE PAY HIKE
Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom is mobilizing its members and others across the state to oppose LR 12CA, a proposed constitutional amendment that would raise salaries for state senators from $12,000 to $21,000 annually.
The group will fight a pay increase until state senators rein in spiraling taxes and spending. Proponents made an argument in 1988, when the last pay hike passed voter muster, that such raise would attract a better quality of legislator, yet taxes and spending both have exploded since then. From 2004 to 2005, Nebraska rose from 14th to 8th highest taxed state in the
nation.1 Since 1988, NE per capita personal income has risen by almost
100%.2 Since FY 1988-89, total appropriations have more than
tripled.3 Nebraska in 2004 ranked next to highest among all adjacent states in appropriations per $1,000 of personal income and per capita. “Career politicians have not served taxpayers well,” said Doug Kagan, NTF chairman. “Senators purposely voted to place the pay raise proposal on the 2006 primary ballot, knowing that fewer citizens vote in primary elections, adding another irritant,” he added.
The substantial number of early filings for legislative races in 2006 demonstrates that candidates understand the current salary and the reimbursement of an average of $7,733 to pay expenses and wish to run regardless. “Citizen legislators should offer public service, even at a financial sacrifice, for only a few years and then return to live under the same laws they themselves have passed for others,” noted Kagan.
It is transparent to our taxpayer group that the leaders of this 75% pay hike effort, one the chief executive officer of the UN Foundation and the other the chancellor of UN-Kearney, want to drive up salaries for state senators in order to win increased appropriations for the university system. We look forward to debating these leaders on this issue.

SUGGESTION FOR A BURMA SHAVE SIGN
ON NEBRASKA STATE BORDER HIGHWAYS:
Our deficit spirals,
As revenues fall.
Senators in session
Raise taxes for all!
Stealing our savings,
They cut us no slack.
I'm leaving Nebraska
And I'm not coming back!
MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN:
People
often contact me with complaints about their taxes, government spending, and
burdensome bureaucratic rules. Unfortunately, most of these complainers only
want to complain. They seem to think that NTF can wave a magic wand and almost
immediately ameliorate our tax-and-spend climate in Nebraska. They themselves do
not want to help fight the Tax-and-Spend Monsters. Taxpayers must understand
that tax-, spending-, and regulation-reform and relief requires a mass movement
of committed people. It takes little time, effort, and expense to become a
taxpayer watchdog. Please come to our meetings at Millard Library in Omaha and
join our grass-roots taxpayers organization. Please feel free to email me
for further information.
